A few more thoughts on the first five episodes of Get Smart.

Mr. Big: It's startling how many of the series' particulars were already firmly in place in the pilot. The shoe phone and the Cone of Silence debut here, as well as Would You Believe? and And... Loving It. 99 is also here, and she and Max share their first almost kiss, something the series would drop midway through the season when it was decided that 99 pining away was funnier than both being hot for each other. 99 and Max work fabulously together right from the start, there's no question why the Chief keeps pairing them. And the black and white filming doesn't hurt it at all.

Diplomat's Daughter: One of my favorites for episode 2, as Max protects Princess Ingrid from being kidnapped by the fiendish Craw. No, not the Craw, the Craw! Ah, they just don't make politically incorrect jokes like that anymore. Despite the gentle mocking of Asians, this is a hysterical episode, with 99's jealousy out in full force as the cute 15-year-old girl Max met five years before turns out to be a 20-year-old nymphette who wants his body. Watch for the amusing 60s dances!

School Daze: Max and 99 go undercover at spy school to net a KAOS infiltrator. You can already see in this, the third episode, why Fang was quickly dropped from the show - the dog is simply awful at doing anything requiring training. That said, this ep has another almost kiss between Max and 99, amusing East Himilayan joke telling, and Max deducing the infiltrator without actually realizing it.

Our Man In Toyland: One of the more memorable episodes of the first season, Max and 99 go undercover at a department store to find out how secrets are being leaked. Lots of great stuff here, with the apartment that's a front - literally -, Max sticking his head in a megaphone to communicate 'secretly' with a fellow agent, and of course the grand finale where Max and 99 finish off KAOS using kids' toys.

Now You See Him, Now You Don't: The first episode of the season that's merely good, but there's still a lot to like here. Max is duped into thinking that KAOS has an invisibility rap for sale, and he must try to prove its existence. This is the first episode with Max's apartment, and it's in full force, with the debut of the invisible wall, the drinks cabinet club, and the vacuum fireplace. Oh, and the net. "Of course! SOPHIE'S the ventriloquist!"

More later. I love this set. :)
