29th-Nov-2007 12:58 pm - Frobisher! Woot!

I had actually forgotten that today was the day Panini released Doctor Who - Voyager in the US and Canada at comic shops. I now have the book, and it is just a giant wash of nostalgia for me.

Some say the Peter Davison/Stockbridge comics were the zenith of DWM comic strip artistry, but for me, nothing beats the Colin Baker comics for pure magic. Written (at first) by Steve Parkhouse and drawn by John Ridgway, these were really awesome, managing to use the 6th Doctor better than the TV show was doing at that point *and* craft stories that could only be done in a comics medium. Oh, and later on, they got the rights to use Peri, meaning the TV companion was actually in the strips - until that point a rarity.

This volume contains the first half of the epic Colin Baker run. The Shape Shifter, which introduces Frobisher, who is generally thought to be one of the best of Who's 'non-canon' companions. Followed by Voyager, Polly the Glot, Once Upon a Time-Lord, War Game, Funhouse, and the 4 'XXXXX's Story' strips that sees Peri inserted into the comics.

The volume is expensive, I will admit - $31.95 is pretty steep. And they're in the original black and white. But even so, for anyone who grew up with DWM in the mid 80s, this is a must-buy and a fantastic collection. The second volume, The World Shapers, is due out in May 2008.

So, my stuff from Viz is now TWO weeks late... so pile Excel Saga, Dr. Slump, etc. on top of this.

(Mmmm, posting from Safe Mode is so fun! The font is so big I want to die...)

DC: Booster Gold 2 (hoping it keeps that 52 vibe), JSA 9 (I'll walk a mile for Jay Garrick), Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes 3: Superman (these have been very dense and VERY geeky), Superman 667 (the moment Busiek leaves this title, so do I).

Dark Horse: Groo 25th Anniversary Special (I actually REMEMBER buying Groo #1 at our local Stop & Shop when I was 9 years old.)

Tokyopop: Fruits Basket Fan Book Neko (everyone on my flist will buy this or I will haunt you for the rest of your days), Full Metal Panic! Novel 1 (Kaname and Sousuke with actual text! Eek!), and Welcome to the NHK 4 (couldn't stand the anime, but enjoy the manga, something actually very common with me).

List as always is from Midtown Comics, who don't always use Diamond, so don't shoot me if some things go missing.
