| Okay Ladies and Gentlemen! Sign ups have ended. I have an excel spreadsheet listing all of the match ups. We had a nice turn out this year with 22 participants. I have sent out the assignment notices via LJ Private Message. (The link should take you to your message inbox if you're logged in.) If you have not received your assignment (or have lost the message), please comment here, and I will give you your assignment again. (Have your LJ comment email notification turned on as I will delete the comment giving you your assignment right after posting it. That way you'll have the info in your email inbox and it won't be out for everyone to see.) The following people had LJ PMs disabled so that I could not send them their assignment: starmatterAssignment Changes: Everyone has 1 week from today to request any assignment changes, it's tough cookies after that (November 17th). If you absolutely cannot handle your SS assignment contact me within 1 week to request an assignment change, and let me know what is forcing the switch request so I can try to not repeat the same issue. (Please keep in mind that gen or single-character-focused gifts are acceptable if your shipping preferences do not match up.) However, I do very much discourage assignment switching. I hope that in the seasonal spirit-of-giving, our SS's do not get picky/petty about your assignments. I spent 5 hours last night doing my best to try to match everyone up with as little conflict as I could manage for the two secret santas I'm running. (A total of 73 people. My brain hurts.) If you want to ask your giftee questions prior to the gift-giving period, I suggest making anonymous comments in response to their surveys on the sign-ups post. Check back to see when you get questions or answers, or ask me to act as a mediator. (I'll play messenger as best I can, but please keep in mind that I have a full time job.) | I’ve now had nine “adult” teeth removed, although on the bright side each extraction has gotten easier. The first four removed were from back when I had braces as a teenager. As part of the re-arranging of my mouth, they had to come out. Two of them came out quickly, but the other two had double-roots and weren’t so willing to budge. I still have vivid memories of a dental hygienist holding my head in place, while the dentist and a second dental hygienist simultaneously tugged at the stubborn tooth. When it finally came free, they shot backwards across the office and slammed into a wall. Meanwhile, I had so much novocaine pumped into my face that my eyelids were asleep.
The next four were my wisdom teeth, which came out in 1993. It actually wasn’t a bad experience; the teeth came almost all the way in (and were actually cutting up the sides of my mouth) so there was very little cutting that needed to be done. A new extraction, though, happened yesterday. Years ago after a tooth cracked, I needed to have a root canal that went through two teeth. (Eek.) It started bothering me this summer, so I went to an endodontist who was able to fix the one closer in that was causing pain. Unfortunately, the other one (which wasn’t actually causing any pain) needed to come out. So after a lot of delaying, I finally bit the bullet.
I have to give the oral surgeon credit, that was much less painful than I’d imagined. I’d been warned that the tooth was brittle (as all root canal teeth are) so I “might hear some cracking noises.” Eeek. I had mental images of the tooth shattering in the process and then them having to dig the roots out of my gums. Not good, right? But I was worked on for less than five minutes and suddenly the surgeon was taking the brace out of my mouth and saying, “All done.” You know it’s gone well when even the receptionist is startled at how fast it was taken care of.
That unfortunately meant lots of packed gauze and painkillers for the rest of today, and I’m still taking some 600mg of Motrin to ease the pain today, but it’s not that bad. (I actually just feel unusually tired and run down today more than anything else. We’ll see how the day progresses. Hopefully all will still be well.) I’m also not looking forward to the implant that will need to come for replacing the tooth, as I know that’s the more hefty of the procedures. But still, that’s a few months away.
Hopefully this is the last tooth extraction for a long while. I appreciate that they’ve been getting less and less painful, but still. I’d like to not have to gum my food down the line, right?

| 1. I enjoyed yoga last night. I am always loathe to go, because ugh, I have to go out of the house and leave my computer and there's people there and I get sweaty and ughhhhh. But I usually end up enjoying it.
2. I vacuumed the house this morning, finally! I have been meaning to for like a week, but now that daylight savings is over, it's starting to get dark so early that by the time I wake up, there's really not enough light to do a good job. So this morning I wasn't really tired yet when Carla woke up, so I just decided to vacuum then, when there was lots of light coming in the windows to illuminate the dust all over the floor (you could see the paths where we walked most often!).
3. I just have one page left to translate on the next chapter of Saint Young Men, so I will start the photoshop phase today or tomorrow. In an effort to get me to stop dragging my feet so much when SYM comes around, I've decided I'm not going to do as much background editing. In the early chapters I wasn't editing SFX at all, but I was editing any background text. Then with the last chapter I did, I started editing all the background text plus the SFX. But there's just so much editing that just thinking about working on this series puts me in full-on avoidance mode, so in order to be able to work on it at all, I think I'm going to really have to cut down what I edit and leave more background stuff in Japanese (with notes if it's anything relevant to understanding the story).

| Due to mitigating circumstances (hello not!swine flu!) we are extending the deadline for accepting newsletter editor applications until Monday, Nov. 16. We also wanted to take the opportunity to give a short primer on how we create the newsletter in case there are individuals who are interested in applying but are hesitant because they don't know the process. As an editor, your job is to scan the newsletter watchlist - whodaily- for items that qualify for inclusion in the newsletter. The watchlist is a dummy LJ that has friends list comprised of individuals and communities who participate in fandom. Each link is then dropped into its appropriate category on the newsletter. There are several ways in which to actually construct the newsletter and each editor has their own preference. Some brave souls hand-code and create an lj post, others use a template and client approach, typically a saved Semagic file. In addition, there is an Excel spreadsheet created by a former editor with macros built in so you can merely copy and paste and let Excel generate the format. What items you link are based on criteria set forth in the editor guidelines. We are an inclusive newsletter and link fic, discussion, art, icons, etc. Our criteria for linking are broad and only call in "editorial prerogative" in rare cases, typically when a fic header does not contain enough information to create a link or if an post is not substantive. For example - an episode reaction consisting simply of "I loved it!" would probably not get linked while an episode reaction with more substance would. As an editor you will become a member of the editorial community satellite_five where we come together to discuss issues and concerns and, on occasion, effect policy. All editors, regardless of status, have full participation rights at the community. If you have any questions about the process, please feel free to leave a comment or email me at scarlettagain@gmail.com. If you would like to apply for an editor position, leave a comment at this post.Thank you! | |

| Okay, so in my ethics class we have this blog-assignment where everyone in the class is required to post a blog about some issue in biomedical ethics that is of particular interest to them. One recent one:
A Texas internal medicine doctor was recently punished by the state medical board with a $10,000 fine and 10 hours of ethics education for having a romantic relationship with a patient. The American Medical Association has decided that it is unethical for a doctor to have a romantic relationship with a patient, and in some cases even a former patient. My question is, if a patient is of sound mind and legal age to consent, as well as both being unmarried, what is the problem with dating a patient? Can a doctor still take care of his wife’s sprained ankle? If you spend most of your time at work, wouldn’t you expect to make social relationships through work?
And the best response ever (bear in mind that these responses are GRADED): I don't think that a doctor should date anyone at all. This just takes his or her mind away from what is important and that is focusing on patients problems. In fact I think that in the future only robots or preists who take a vow of celibacy should be allowed to be doctors.Ok maybe not but there must be a reason why that doctor was punished by the state medical board. For example I dont think a Psychiatrist should date her patient or former patient. But i dont see a problem with an eye doctor taking advantage of a poor sighted patient if that doctor is ugly.
OH MY GOD I almost PEED MYSELF.

| Hi, I just wanted to ask a question. I was a huge fan of the dubbed as a kid and I want to get back into It. Is it better to start fresh with subs? or should I keep going with the dubbed ones? Thanks | |

| After seeing Monsters vs Aliens, I can't help but wonder something.
NOBODY thinks it's at all strange that Susan's outfit gets changed twice while she's unconscious. What.
She's nearly 50 feet tall. Not to even wonder how they got an outfit that sized ready so quickly, how did they get her dressed? Wouldn't that be extremely awkward for anyone involved?
OK, so she's traumatized by her situation too much to wonder this herself the first time.
But then it happens again, and she's not really flustered. It's just all very strange, and while I understand it's mostly a kid's movie, I can't help but ponder the logistics of such and outfit, and state of denial Susan must be in to just accept some strangers (probably a large group) dressed her.
Just weird.
Also, a viewing suggestion: watch this as part of a Seth Rogen double feature. I ran up Zack and Miri Make a Porno beforehand. All I could hear during Monsters vs Aliens was B.O.B. saying "So you like to suck each other's cocks?" - Mood:contemplative

| So I went ahead and did it!I've been really addicted to watching Let's Plays and runthroughs of classic games lately. I think I need to plug in my SNES and try to get a perfect run of Super Mario World at some point. I remember being so happy to find the Special Zone and then frustrated at how HARD it was, and then happy again when I managed to beat every stage. And now, for NaNo! What's this? Chapter 2 finished? \o/ | |

| *flails at House 6x07* ( Spoilers for House 6x07! )Despite my ambivalence toward the season premiere, IMO, this season has been really amazing so far. I'm not exactly happy with all of the developments, but overall, the season has still been really good, especially compared with the unevenness of last season. | |
