One Piece and shipping
I've been thinking recently about the One Piece manga, and more specifically its lack of popularity in the US compared to Naruto and Bleach. Now, there are likely several reasons for this, including the wretched 4Kids hack job dub, but one that immediately comes to mind is this:

Oda doesn't ship. At ALL.

Now, you can argue that other SJ series also lack romance, but that's not really totally true. While they may lack couples, there are always tinges of romantic angst, usually one-sided. Bleach has Orihime's love of Ichigo, Eyeshield 21 has the occasional hints of Sena/Suzuna, etc. There's usually at least one character with feelings for another.

Not in One Piece. It is the adventure over all. Sanji may lust after Nami and Robin, but the chances of that being done as a serious plotline are zero. (Nami and Robin both being unusually strong characters for Shonen Jump females also helps.) But as much as I like Luffy/Nami myself, if it's done well, you can't really point to anything obvious in the canon and say 'look, Oda is trying to telegraph this to us!'. It isn't about the ships.

So, no canon wars = lower popularity? Not quite. :) There's another, bigger reason. Oda doesn't draw bishies. Oda's art is broad and comedic, and he is not known for his handsome guys. Even Zoro and Sanji, the two most frequently yaoi'd up guys, are more rugged than bishie. Not to mention also frequently used for comedic effect (Ooooh, hot hot Zoro snot bubble snores...)

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of One Piece yaoi, and a lot of fangirls who love it. But the yaoi guys in One Piece are, well, more 'manly' than the ones in Bleach or Naruto. Could this be another reason for its lack of popularity?

Or maybe pirates just lose to ninjas.

PIRATES NEVER LOSE TO NINJAS! They merely make a strategic advance to the rear, return to their ships, and fire upon their poncy-ass hidden village from a safe distance. So says Great Captain Usopp, and who am I to argue with the captain? XD

I tend to attribute some of OP's lack of popularity to the terrible dub. Naruto's dub may have been edited, but it wasn't mutilated the way OP's was. The dub gave OP an unpleasant taint of "kids' show" and in a subculture where people already get shit for watching cartoons as adults the last thing most of the more poseur ones want is to be caught watching a kids' show.

I'm going to have to agree with you on the lack of bishonen part--I had a hard time getting a friend of mine to even read One Piece because the character designs "offended her aesthetic sensibilities," and I have spoken to people who refused to read it because of the art style.

Other possible factors:
~lack of DBZ-esque powerups for main characters.
~the power of friendship as a main theme, as opposed to kicking ass and looking cool doing it being the whole point of the series.
~lack of emo--an abundance of tragic backstories and a lot of psychological hangups because of them, but not much emo.
~it's got enough sheer tardery and randomness to put off the "FANDOM IS SRS BSNS" crowd, but not enough to haul in the Bobobo fanboys.

I would have to agree with the person above. I couldn't get into One Piece because I honestly can't stand the art style. And (contrary to popular belief), I actually do read manga for the art. I can deal with rugged character design and no shipping (for example, I'm LOVING Gurren Lagann right now) but I just can't do art that I don't like. It's the same reason I refuse to buy/read those ugly ass super-bishonen yaoi manga where all the guys have super long legs and pointy chins. ^^;

I've tried following both the manga and the anime, and in both cases I couldn't get past the butt-ugly artwork. I don't expect bishies and supermodels, nor do I insist on 'realistic' art per se, but I hate grotesque. OP seems to revel in grotesque. 'nuff said.
